This Tang dynasty green-ground handmade marbled-clay porcelain ewer is shaped through the jiaotai technique, in which differently toned clays are layered and interwoven to form naturally flowing patterns. Across the gentle green ground, the surface recalls ripples and wood grain, preserving a record of clay being layered, turned, and formed by hand.
